The Cost of Blood Type Determination and Syphilis Testing Will Increase in Latvia

For residents donating blood, nothing will change — blood donation and related laboratory tests will remain free. The changes concern paid services used by medical institutions and specialists, such as laboratory tests. Prices for several paid laboratory services at the State Blood Donor Center (GCDC) will increase. Here are just a few examples of the price hikes: – Blood type determination using the plate method will cost 4.80 euros instead of the current 3.27 euros. – Blood type and Rh factor determination using gel cards will rise from 9.96 to 11.36 euros. – Screening for anti-erythrocyte antibodies using gel cards and indirect antiglobulin test will increase from 8.98 to 10.97 euros. – Direct antiglobulin test will go up from 4.46 to 5.56 euros. – Rh phenotype and Kell antigen determination will increase from 10.41 to 11.82 euros. Price increases are also planned for other tests. The price list includes tests for infections and nucleic acid amplification tests (NAT), which were not previously offered as paid services. Among them are tests for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, as well as blood type determination via reverse reaction using enzyme cards. The cost of these tests will range from 3.21 to 12.70 euros, while the NAT test with interpretation will cost 44.68 euros. **The government explained the reason for the price increase**: the new prices have been introduced so that the service costs reflect their actual expenses. Since the adoption of the current Cabinet of Ministers regulations in 2022, the salaries of medical workers have significantly increased, as well as the prices of medicines, chemicals, and laboratory materials.
