At the beginning of the week, Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski announced that the capital's Civil Registry Office would carry out the first transcription of a marriage certificate concluded by a same-sex couple abroad, writes bb.lv, citing TVN 24. He added that based on the court's decision in this specific case, the Office would consider subsequent applications for marriage certificates of same-sex couples issued by European Union countries. "This morning we carried out the first transcription of a same-sex marriage in accordance with the decisions of the courts: the Court of the European Union and the Supreme Administrative Court. As I promised, without delay, immediately," the Mayor of Warsaw stated on Thursday. He added that "subsequent applications of this kind will be processed very quickly," as there is an obligation to comply with court decisions. In March, the Supreme Administrative Court ruled in a case concerning the entry into the Polish civil registry of the marriage act of two Poles, legally concluded in 2018 in Berlin. The court ordered the capital's Civil Registry Office to make the entry within 30 days. Earlier, in 2023, the Supreme Administrative Court referred a preliminary question to the Court of the European Union. Two years later, in November 2025, the EU Court ruled that a member state is obliged to recognize a same-sex marriage legally concluded in another EU country, even if the legislation of that state does not recognize such unions. According to the editorial board, the decision of the Warsaw authorities could become an important legal precedent for Poland and demonstrate the growing influence of European law on the domestic policies of EU countries. Meanwhile, the issue of legalizing same-sex marriages within Poland itself is likely to remain a subject of sharp public and political debate for a long time.
