The downed drone was discovered on the evening of Sunday, May 17, in the Utena district of Lithuania, located near the borders with Belarus and Latvia. This was reported by Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) citing the National Crisis Management Center of the country (NKVC). According to preliminary information, it is a military drone belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The wreckage of the UAV was found in a field near the village of Samane. "Yes, it crashed, but there are no signs of an explosion. Whether it had explosives is still difficult to answer," said NKVC head Vilmantas Vitkauskas. According to him, it is also not yet possible to say for certain which country the drone came from. "Based on preliminary data, judging by what we see on the wreckage, and what our colleagues sent us, it is likely a Ukrainian drone," added Vitkauskas. At the same time, representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces stated that on May 17, radars did not detect any drones in the sky over the country. Law enforcement is currently working at the site of the UAV discovery. Authorities announced the launch of operation "Shield," which is declared upon the discovery of explosive objects and other concerning items. In March, a Ukrainian drone fell in Lithuania near the border with Belarus. Two months earlier, a Ukrainian drone had already fallen in Lithuania. At the end of March, the UAV was spotted in the Varėna district of the country, bordering Belarus. According to Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, the UAV was used for a Ukrainian operation against Russia but went off course. The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, Arvydas Anušauskas, explained at that time that the drone was not detected by radars in either his country or Belarus, as it "apparently" flew at an altitude below 300 meters. ## Due to the Drone, NATO Planes Were Scrambled in Latvia As previously reported by BB.lv, another drone incident occurred on May 17 in neighboring Latvia. There, NATO planes were scrambled after an unidentified drone entered the country's airspace in the morning but soon left it. The Latvian Armed Forces stated that such incidents "remain possible" as long as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues. The report did not specify which country the drone belonged to. Additionally, on the night of May 17, the military and police of Finland searched for a drone in South Karelia, near the Russian border, for an hour. The reason was the words of a witness, according to Finnish broadcaster Yle. The media did not provide the results of the operation.
