She explained that 15 years ago, up to 15,000 boys were born in the country each year. Now, 4,000 to 5,000 young men are born annually. "It is clear that we definitely cannot recruit 4,100 young people from this number, as the defense plans stipulate. By 2040, the problem will become very clear; we will not be able to recruit 4,100 people," Rannaveski explained. According to Rannaveski, every citizen of Estonia is obliged to defend the country's independence. "I hope that this issue (about the mandatory conscription of women for military service) is more about 'when' rather than 'if,'" Rannaveski said. Meanwhile, Estonian women are not eager to serve in the military. Quite the opposite – in recent years, the number of Estonian women voluntarily enlisting for military service has decreased. If in 2021, 60 girls joined the military, in 2023 there were 50, in 2024 - 49, and in 2025 - 45. However, according to Rannaveski, the girls who enlist for military service generally demonstrate higher motivation than many young men.
