Eleven years after the release of the iconic third Witcher, CD Projekt Red has decided to return to the well-known game. The company announced the development of the expansion The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past. Songs of the Past will be the third major expansion for the game The Witcher 3, which was released back in 2015. Details about the plot are still scarce, with only the information that the story will once again be connected to Geralt of Rivia. CD Projekt Red is working on the storyline in collaboration with the Polish studio Fool’s Theory, which is currently developing a remake of the first Witcher. The studio promises to share more details about the project closer to the end of summer. However, there are already rumors that the expansion will serve as a link between the third and fourth installments of the series. The release of the expansion is scheduled for 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Versions for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 are not mentioned, although CD Projekt Red was actively involved in the launch of the new Nintendo console, releasing Cyberpunk 2077 for Switch 2, so the appearance of The Witcher 3 on Switch 2 in the future cannot be ruled out. The announcement of the new expansion for The Witcher 3 indirectly hints that the wait for The Witcher 4 will be even longer. After the teaser trailer at The Game Awards 2024 and a technical demonstration on the Unreal Engine 5, there have been few major updates regarding the fourth installment. The release date is still not announced, and now that the studio has returned to the third installment, the release of The Witcher 4 in 2027 seems less likely. It is very interesting to speculate on how exactly buyers of "Songs of the Past" will gain access to the new content. The two previous expansions — Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine — can be completed during the main campaign about searching for Ciri or returned to after the finale: both options involve unique scenes and dialogues. Will a similar principle apply to the third DLC? An answer would clarify the situation regarding a potential connection with the first or fourth installments of The Witcher.
