The Latvian national ice hockey team will compete in Group A at the 2027 World Championship, where its opponents will be the reigning world champion Finland and the silver medalist Switzerland. The tournament will take place in Germany from May 14 to May 30, 2027. The matches of Group A will be held at venues in Mannheim. In addition to Finland and Switzerland, the Latvian team will face Sweden, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and Ukraine, which has returned to the elite division. Thus, Latvia finds itself in the same group with two of the strongest teams from the last World Championship. Among the opponents are also well-known teams that Latvian hockey players regularly encounter at major international tournaments. Group B will play in Düsseldorf. There, Canada, the USA, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Denmark, Norway, Hungary, and Kazakhstan will compete. It is important to note that it can already be said that the battle for a quarterfinal spot in Group A will be extremely intense. In addition to the two finalists from the last World Championship, the group also includes traditionally strong teams from Sweden and Germany. For the Latvian team, the upcoming championship will be an opportunity to build on the success of recent years. This year, the team achieved its second-best result in history, finishing sixth at the world championship. Recall that the 2026 World Championship concluded with Finland's victory, which defeated Switzerland 1-0 in overtime in the final. Norway sensationally won the bronze medals, marking its first appearance on the podium at a world championship. There is still almost a year until the tournament in Germany begins, but the group compositions already allow for an assessment of the future scenarios and the level of competition that awaits the Latvian team.
