The princess died on the evening of June 11 in one of Bangkok's hospitals. She had been under constant medical supervision since December 2022 after suddenly losing consciousness. At that time, palace representatives stated that the cause of her deteriorating health was a mycoplasma infection, which typically causes respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia. Since then, the princess's condition remained critical. Bajrakitiyabha was the eldest child of the King of Thailand and one of the most prominent figures in the royal family due to her active public and human rights advocacy. She paid special attention to reforming the criminal justice system and protecting women's rights. One of her most well-known projects was the Kamlangjai initiative (“Inspiration”), aimed at supporting female inmates and their successful reintegration after release. The princess was also actively involved in international programs to improve the conditions of women in prisons and combat violence against women. Bajrakitiyabha was born on December 7, 1978. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at Thammasat University, she continued her education in the United States, where she earned a master's degree and a doctorate in law from Cornell University. Her research focused on the protection of the rights of defendants in criminal proceedings. After working at the Thai Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, the princess returned home and took the position of public prosecutor. From 2012 to 2014, she represented Thailand as an ambassador to Austria, and then refocused on justice and social reform issues. In 2017, Bajrakitiyabha was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Her work made a significant contribution to promoting the so-called Bangkok Rules — international standards for the treatment of women prisoners and the application of alternative measures of punishment for female offenders. Although the official heir to the throne is the king's younger son, Prince Dipangkorn Rasmichoti, Princess Bajrakitiyabha has repeatedly been regarded by experts as one of the key figures in the future of the Thai monarchy due to her experience in public service and authority. The death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha is a great loss for Thailand. She will be remembered not only as a member of the royal family but also as a lawyer, diplomat, and public figure who dedicated a significant part of her life to protecting women's rights and reforming the justice system.
