May became the hardest month for the civilian population of Ukraine in the last three years. According to data from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the number of killed and injured civilians was the highest since April 2022. In the month, at least 274 civilians were killed in the country, and another 1,763 people were injured. Compared to May of last year, the total number of casualties increased by 93%. The largest contribution to this statistic came from Russian missile and drone strikes on major cities located far from the front line. Such attacks accounted for about 45% of all deaths and injuries. Among the most affected cities mentioned in the report are Kyiv and Dnipro. The increase in casualties shows that the danger to the civilian population persists not only in frontline areas. Even residents of large cities, far from the combat zone, continue to regularly face the threat of air attacks. In areas closer to the front line, the main cause of losses has been strikes from short-range drones. In May alone, 64 people were killed and 539 were injured as a result of such attacks. This is the highest monthly casualty figure from such strikes since the beginning of the full-scale war. In fact, drones remain one of the most dangerous types of weapons for civilians in the frontline zone, where the time for warning and sheltering is often limited. According to the UN, since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, more than 16,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine, and over 46,000 have been injured. At the same time, the organization emphasizes that the real figures may be higher. Observers do not have access to territories in Ukraine captured by Russia, so some cases remain outside the official statistics. The latest data indicates a continuing rise in civilian casualties and that the security situation in the country remains extremely difficult.
