Юрмала готовится к Лиго

The festive cycle starts in the middle of the month and will last until June 24. The central events will be the celebration of the summer solstice in Dzintari on June 21 and the large-scale Ligo festivities on the seaside in Kauguri on June 23. Organizers promise a rich program with songs, dances, bonfires, wreaths, and an introduction to folk customs. ## Summer Solstice Celebration in Dzintari One of the main events will be the celebration of the summer solstice near the Dzintari Concert Hall on June 21. Starting from 5:00 PM, guests will be able to participate in wreath weaving workshops and visit a festive market that will operate until late evening. The highlight will be a large concert of joint singing, which will begin at 8:00 PM. Soloists Madara Botmane, Jānis Apeinis, Jolanta Strikaite, and Georges Sixna will take the stage. They will be joined by the combined choir of Jūrmala, the combined kokle orchestra of Jūrmala and Latvia, dance groups, and a musical band led by Madara Kalniņa. Those who do not make it into the hall will be able to watch the concert on a large screen outdoors next to the concert complex. After the concert, the celebration will move to the sea. At 10:00 PM, a traditional fire ritual will take place on Dzintari beach, accompanied by a performance from the ethno-music group Ogas. Against the backdrop of the sunset over the sea, this ritual promises to be one of the most atmospheric moments of the evening. ## Ligo by the Sea in Kauguri The main celebrations of Jāņi night will take place on June 23 at Kauguri beach near the end of Captain Zolts Street. At 9:30 PM, a traditional Jāņi bonfire will be lit — one of the main symbols of the holiday. Immediately after that, a concert by the popular Latvian band Labvēlīgais tips will begin, lasting until 11:00 PM. Later, the celebration will smoothly transition into night dancing under the open sky. From 11:15 PM to 2:00 AM, guests will be entertained by DJ Grauzdiņš. The music, sea air, and festive atmosphere will allow everyone to celebrate the shortest night of the year right on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Throughout the evening, cafes and relaxation areas will be open where guests can grab a bite to eat and spend time with friends and family. ## Preparations for the Holiday Will Start Early The first events will begin even before the official celebrations. On June 16, the Central Library of Jūrmala invites families with children to an educational meeting with the folklore group Skance. Through games, songs, and creative activities, participants will learn more about the traditions of Ligo and the summer solstice. On June 18, an evening of Jāņi songs will take place in the garden of the house of Rainis and Aspazija. Together with the folklore group Mare, guests will be able to participate in joint singing, discuss folk traditions, and learn to weave oak wreaths — one of the main attributes of Jāņi day. Thus, this year Jūrmala offers to celebrate Ligo and Jāņi day in several formats — from intimate gatherings and workshops to large concerts, folk festivities, and night dances by the sea. There will be opportunities for everyone to feel the special magic of the summer solstice and touch upon ancient Latvian traditions.
