A total of four Latvian hockey players were selected in this year's draft, setting a record. Previously, no more than three players from Latvia had been chosen in a single NHL draft. Berzkalns was selected with the overall 58th pick. Last season, Berzkalns helped the Muskegon Lumberjacks finish second in the United States Hockey League (USHL). He will spend the next season with the Boston College Eagles, competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In the fourth round, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Latvian goaltender Pluminsh with the overall 114th pick. Last season, Pluminsh played for the Zemgale/LBTU club, which finished second in the Latvian championship, and also defended the national team's goal at the U-18 World Championship, where Latvia finished fourth. As a result of the tournament, the goaltender was included in the symbolic team. Also in the fourth round, the Buffalo Sabres selected Murnieks with the overall 124th pick. In the past and this year, he represented Latvia's U-18 and U-20 teams at the World Championships, and in May, he played for the senior national team, making his debut at the age of 17. Murnieks spent the club season with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). As previously reported, on Friday, the New York Rangers selected Latvian defenseman Alberts Shmits with the overall fifth pick. Thus, he became the highest-drafted Latvian in NHL history. With the first pick of the draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected forward Gavin McKenna.
