The key event was the sale of billionaire Joe Lewis's collection, which included 24 works by modernists, including Picasso, Monet, and Francis Bacon. It brought in £296 million ($390 million) and set a record for the auction of a single collection in London. More than 70% of the works were sold above the upper estimate. The top lot was Amedeo Modigliani's painting "Nude with Necklace" (Nu assis au collier, 1917–1918), which was purchased for £48.2 million ($63.5 million). Another work by Modigliani, "Man with a Pipe (Notary from Nice)" (Homme à la pipe (Le Notaire de Nice), 1918–1919), was sold for £23.3 million ($30.7 million). Asian collectors played a significant role in the major transactions, acquiring more than a third of the works on offer.
