Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs commented on the situation that arose after reports about the investigation of cybersecurity expert Elvis Strazdiņš in connection with the investigation of the cyberattack on LVM, LETA reports. In a video address published on Tuesday, the head of government acknowledged that the publication by Strazdiņš came as a surprise to him. "For me, it was a big surprise. And, to be honest, knowing how professionally he approaches such issues, this is abnormal," the Prime Minister said. At the same time, Kulbergs urged not to rush to conclusions and emphasized that the police are acting within their powers. According to him, all circumstances of the incident will be thoroughly examined, and on Thursday, the Cabinet of Ministers' Information Systems Committee will discuss the issue of the cyberattack on LVM. The meeting is expected to address the causes of the incident, its consequences, lessons learned, and further measures to strengthen cybersecurity. What is important to know: the police have not yet reported the initiation of a separate criminal case against any specific individual. It concerns the examination of the actions of one of the individuals within the framework of an already existing criminal process initiated after the cyberattack on LVM. Earlier, the State Police reported that they had identified a case where an unrelated person without the appropriate authority posed as an employee of LVM and state institutions, and independently contacted the alleged cybercriminals to discuss a possible ransom payment for data decryption. According to the police, these actions were not coordinated with the institutions involved in the investigation and mitigation of the consequences of the cyberattack. At the same time, law enforcement officials emphasized that no one has been detained in this case, and the published information does not indicate specific individuals whose actions are being investigated. Earlier, Elvis Strazdiņš stated that he independently contacted the alleged organizers of the attack and clarified the amount of the demanded ransom. According to him, the criminals requested an amount equivalent to 0.1% of LVM's annual turnover — over 600,000 euros. In the company LVM itself, it was stated that no ransom demands had been received. The enterprise also emphasized that even if such demands were received, they do not intend to pay the criminals. Responsibility for the attack was previously claimed by a foreign group using ransomware. The investigation is ongoing by the State Police and the computer incident response center Cert.lv.
