The Belgium national team reached the Round of 16 at the World Cup, making one of the most remarkable comebacks of the tournament. Trailing Senegal 0:2, the Belgians managed to take the match into extra time and won 3:2. The first half ended in favor of Senegal. In the 25th minute, after two hits on the goalpost, Habib Diallo scored the opening goal. Immediately after the break, Ismaïla Sarr increased the African team's lead, converting a one-on-one chance after a long pass from Moussa Niakhaté. It seemed that Senegal was confidently controlling the match, but the ending completely changed the scenario of the game. Less than five minutes before the end of regular time, substitute Romelu Lukaku reduced the deficit after a pass from Thomas Meunier. A few minutes later, Youri Tielemans scored with a precise header from a cross by Leandro Trossard, restoring parity at 2:2. For the Belgians, this goal was a last-minute salvation and allowed the game to go into extra time. The climax came in the 117th minute. Dodi Lukebakio hit the crossbar, after which the referee, reviewing the replay with VAR, awarded a penalty for a foul against Tielemans. In the fifth minute of stoppage time in extra time, the injured player confidently converted the penalty and brought victory to Belgium — 3:2. Senegal had one last chance to save the match, but Papa Matar Sarr's dangerous free kick went over the goal. In the Round of 16, Belgium will face the USA. This World Cup is the first in history to feature 48 national teams in the final stage. The tournament is taking place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, with the final scheduled for July 19.
