Janis Dombrova decided to summarize his first month as Minister of the Interior this morning on social media. Here is a brief report from the head of the Ministry of the Interior: "It has been about a month since I became the Minister of the Interior. I will list some of the work accomplished in the past month. ▪ ️ Strengthening the state language ▪ ️ *) An order has been issued defining the Latvian language as the only language of internal communication in the Ministry of the Interior and its subordinate institutions. *) Services of the State Border Guard are provided only in the state language. ▪ Border security ▪ ️ *) The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to extend the regime of enhanced border protection on the Latvian-Belarusian border. It is worth noting that in June, about 2,300 individuals were detained for illegal border crossing. *) The infrastructure of the eastern border of Latvia, technological support, and measures to strengthen the capacity of border protection have been assessed. *) Latvia's position on migration restrictions, external border security, and hybrid threats has been presented in the formats of the European Union and regional cooperation. ▪ ️ Migration restrictions ▪ ️ The implementation of the recommendations of the parliamentary investigation commission has begun, developing an action plan for the Cabinet of Ministers to tighten immigration policy and limit economic immigration schemes. *) The authorities support additional funding for the State Border Guard so that the institution can more effectively carry out measures to control migrants. *) In reception centers for asylum seekers, it has been instructed to expedite the deportation of individuals without legal grounds for staying in Latvia and to enhance security measures in these centers. *) Changes have been made to the guidelines of the “Mucenieki” asylum seekers center. *) Security raids have been organized in the centers for asylum seekers. *) An agreement has been reached with the Minister of Education and Science Ilze Indrikson to strengthen control over the admission and stay of foreign students, as well as to assess the introduction of sanctions for universities that do not adequately monitor invited foreign students. *) By the minister's decision, I have not granted residency permits to any foreign citizens, but I have signed decisions to include several foreign citizens in the "black list." ▪ Strengthening the internal affairs and state security agencies ▪ ️ *) Work has begun to improve the civil defense system aimed at expanding the network of shelters, modernizing alarm sirens, enhancing 112.lv, and strengthening societal readiness. *) Funding has been approved for the continuation of the construction of 11 disaster management centers, strengthening the infrastructure of internal affairs services. *) The needs of the State Police, State Border Guard, State Fire and Rescue Service, Cybercrime Unit, and Forensic Unit have been assessed, and their development priorities have been identified. *) A common understanding has been reached with the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkevics on migration restrictions, strengthening civil defense, and measures to enhance the capacity of internal affairs services. *) Visits have been made to the State Fire and Rescue Service depots, police stations, and departments to identify necessary work for improving infrastructure and equipment replenishment needs. *) Work has begun to review the operations of the State Procurement Agency and identify suspicious projects that were initiated in previous years. *) In cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, work has begun on closer cooperation between defense and internal affairs services, including the development of counter-drone capabilities. *) Work has begun to improve the security of data centers (databases) of the Ministry of the Interior.
