Since 2017, at the request of the prosecutor's office, the museum has returned more than 120 items worth approximately $95 million. The basis for the latest confiscation was the results of an investigation that uncovered an underground network of smugglers who operated after World War II. Artifacts stolen from Turkey, Italy, and Egypt were transported to the United States, where they were then sold for millions of dollars.
