Romania has sent an official request to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine proposing to reprogram Ukrainian drones so that they automatically self-destruct in the event of an accidental entry into the country's territorial waters. This was reported by the acting Minister of Defense of Romania, Radu Miruță, as stated by **Radio România**. According to him, the relevant proposal has already been forwarded to his Ukrainian counterpart. “ I officially sent a request to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, indicating that it would be advisable for Romania that any drone launched over the Black Sea and produced in Ukraine be programmed in such a way that in the event of an accidental entry into Romania's territorial waters, it would automatically self-destruct,” Miruță stated. The minister explained that such a function could be implemented through pre-programming. According to him, the decision for self-destruction can be made by the drone's built-in microprocessor even in the event of a loss of communication with the operator. Additionally, Miruță reported that he is negotiating with NATO allies to strengthen Romania's air defense system, especially after a recent incident involving a drone in Galați County. “Negotiations with three countries are at an advanced stage. However, this issue remains sensitive for each state, so we will allow our partners to announce the completion of the internal procedures necessary for sending additional air defense assets,” he noted. The Romanian side has also requested additional equipment from allies for detecting and monitoring low-flying targets. Romania's proposal reflects a desire to enhance the security of its airspace amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and regular incidents of drones entering the border areas of NATO countries. At the same time, Bucharest is seeking to strengthen its own air defense system and expand support from allies.
