Linen is one of the most durable and long-lasting natural fabrics. It breathes well and provides comfort even in hot weather. However, improper washing can lead to shrinkage, and the fabric itself can become stiff and rough. Experts recommend following a few simple rules to avoid these problems. ### Wash in Cold Water According to textile specialist Elena Hendricks, the main enemy of linen is hot water. It is often the cause of fabric shrinkage. The best option is hand washing, but if you use a washing machine, choose a delicate cycle and cold or cool water. After washing, it is recommended to dry items naturally—laying them flat on a surface or carefully hanging them on hangers. If a dryer is unavoidable, use the lowest temperature and special dryer balls that help maintain the softness of the fabric. ### Don’t Overload the Washing Machine Laundry care expert Ashley Matuzka Kidder recommends not overloading the drum too tightly. Overloading makes it harder for the detergent to rinse out, and its residues can make the fabric stiff. Additionally, it is better to wash linen separately from heavy items—towels, jeans, or sportswear. Such proximity accelerates fabric wear, leading to pilling and lint. ### Choose Gentle Detergents Experts advise using detergents with a neutral pH level and a simple composition. Strong alkaline powders can gradually weaken linen fibers. If a special detergent is not available, a mild gel without dyes and intense fragrances will suffice. ### Add Some Vinegar Washing expert Matt O'Connor recommends adding about half a cup of white vinegar along with the detergent or during the rinse cycle. Vinegar helps remove detergent residues, neutralizes unpleasant odors, and makes the fabric noticeably softer. ### Avoid Fabric Softener Fabric softeners and dryer sheets are not suitable for linen. They leave a thin waxy film on the fabric, causing it to lose its natural texture and become dull over time. Some suggest using hair conditioner; however, experts warn that if used incorrectly, it can leave greasy marks on the fabric. ### When to Choose Dry Cleaning If it comes to blazers, suits, dresses, or other complex garments, it is safer to entrust care to professionals. Dry cleaning helps maintain the shape of the item and ensures quality ironing without the risk of damaging the fabric. ### If the Linen Has Already Shrunk It is not always possible to fully return to the original size, but sometimes the situation can be improved. For this, it is recommended to wash the item again in cold water on a delicate cycle, and then during drying, gently stretch the fabric by hand, restoring its shape. Another method is to soak the item in warm water with a small amount of baby shampoo. After that, excess moisture should be blotted with a towel without wringing the fabric, then gently reshape the item and leave it to dry naturally. Linen clothes will last much longer if washed in cool water, use gentle detergents, and avoid aggressive drying. A few simple rules will help keep items soft, neat, and prevent unpleasant shrinkage even after numerous washes.
