Tropical Storm Maysak became the first this year to reach the mainland of China. Heavy rains caused widespread flooding, reservoir overflow, and destruction in several regions of the country. The most severe situation occurred in the city of Nanning, where 26 people died after a dam break. In total, according to Chinese authorities, 39 people have fallen victim to the disaster. Due to the heavy rains, many residents found themselves trapped in their homes for several days. Hundreds of people were injured after buildings collapsed due to the severe weather. Thousands of structures sustained various damages, and the state agency Xinhua reported that tornadoes were even observed in some areas. A large-scale operation was launched to rescue people. Rescuers used drones and thousands of boats to reach communities cut off by water. In total, about 130,000 people have been evacuated, including 48,000 residents of Nanning. The storm hit Hainan Island last Friday and then continued moving towards the northern regions of Vietnam. At the same time, Chinese authorities are already warning of a new threat. A powerful typhoon Bavi is expected to approach Taiwan soon, which may then reach the eastern coast of China. In several regions, meteorologists are again forecasting heavy rains and worsening weather conditions. The aftermath of Storm Maysak has become one of the most severe for China since the beginning of the tropical cyclone season. Rescue services continue to operate in the affected areas as the country prepares for a new blow from nature—the approach of Typhoon Bavi.
