One of the main outcomes of the NATO summit in Ankara was the confirmation of the allies' commitment to the principle of collective defense enshrined in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, citing the head of the department, Baiba Braže. According to the minister, the alliance countries also agreed to maintain military support for Ukraine. For this year and the next, at least $140 billion is planned to be allocated for these purposes. Another area of work will be the accelerated development of NATO's military potential. As Braže noted, the experience of the war in Ukraine shows that modern armed conflicts require new approaches, so special attention will be paid to drone technologies, counter-drone measures, air defense, and technological superiority. For the Baltic states, issues of regional security are of particular importance. At the summit, Latvia emphasized the need to develop long-range weapons, counter hybrid threats, and strengthen measures regarding the so-called shadow fleet of Russia, which, according to the Latvian side, poses risks to the security of the Baltic Sea. The participants of the meeting also confirmed the common assessment of Russia as a long-term threat to the security of the Euro-Atlantic space. According to Braže, among the main challenges, the allies consider sabotage, cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and the use of migration as a tool of pressure. The development of the defense industry was also discussed on the sidelines of the summit. During the NATO Defense Industry Forum, new joint arms procurements and multinational cooperation projects were announced. Latvia was represented at the forum by companies LMT, Ammunity, and the Latvian Federation of Security and Defense Industries. In addition, Latvia joined Canada's initiative to create a Defense, Security, and Resilience Bank. The founding countries hope to complete the establishment of the new financial structure by 2027 to facilitate access for defense industry enterprises to long-term financing. The NATO summit took place in Ankara from July 6 to 8. The Latvian delegation was headed by President Edgars Rinkēvičs, while Baiba Braže participated in the NATO-Ukraine Council meeting, meetings of foreign ministers of the alliance countries with partners, and other forum events.
