The Ministry of Agriculture has submitted for approval a draft amendment aimed at expanding the range of products provided to schoolchildren. If the initiative is supported, alongside drinking milk, children will be able to receive kefir and natural yogurt without sugar and additives, and during educational events — also honey. The ministry explains that an increasing number of children are diagnosed with food allergies, intolerance to certain products, or heightened sensitivity of the digestive system. As a result, many schoolchildren refuse to drink milk, and the goal of the program to promote dairy products is only partially achieved. According to the authors of the project, fermented dairy products can be a suitable alternative for such children. Kefir and natural yogurt are usually easier to digest, and the lactic acid bacteria they contain aid digestion and help the body better absorb calcium, proteins, and other essential nutrients. For children, this means a wider selection in the school nutrition program. If the changes come into effect, children who find it difficult to drink regular milk will be able to receive other dairy products without added sugar. Specific changes also concern honey. It is proposed to allow its use during tastings and educational events dedicated to healthy eating and local products. The ministry notes that honey is viewed not as a substitute for sugar in the daily diet, but as a clear example of a natural sweetener. According to the agency, familiarizing students with such products will help them better understand the differences between natural and industrially processed ingredients and develop more conscious eating habits. Currently, the rules stipulate that participants in the school program are provided with fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as pasteurized, lactose-free, or ultra-pasteurized milk, at least once a week for free. If the changes are approved, the range of products in the school program will be broader, and schools will be able to offer children more options for healthy eating.
