The Saeima Human Rights Commission today approved amendments to the Public Media Law, which effectively cease the use of minority languages in these public media. Russian and other minority languages will only be allowed in special cases - for example, in emergencies or to refute hostile propaganda. The parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Ivars Abolins, who attended the commission meeting, did not hide his enthusiasm for this decision on social media today: "A historic day - the Russian language should not be a part of everyday life in public media!" The Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Commission, following the decision of the Constitutional Court, supported in the second reading the proposal to minimize the presence of the Russian language in public media. The consequences of occupation continue to diminish - first, the monument to the occupation was demolished, then Russian schools were closed, then the activities of LR4 were halted, and now - this step. The role of the Russian language continues to decrease and will continue to decrease.
