Today is a small celebration for the member of the Saeima from the National Alliance, Arturs Butāns - his and his party colleagues' amendment to the Law on Electronic Media has been approved in the second reading. This happened at a meeting of the Saeima's Human Rights Commission (!), the majority of whose members decided that to strengthen democracy, commercial radio stations broadcasting in Russian should be prohibited from airing advertisements in that language. Indeed: why should radio stations operating in Russian broadcast advertisements in that language?! Moreover, the very existence of Russian-language radio stations is a temporary phenomenon, considering the attitude of conservative deputies. "Advertising in the media should only be in Latvian. Thank you for your work - this decision is the foundation of a strong state!" - reacted on social media in response to a comment by Deputy Butāns, publicist Juris Ulmanis - one of the organizers of the campaign to close the M. Chekhov Russian Theater.
