As part of a project funded with the support of the European Union, surveillance and sensor systems are being expanded, maritime monitoring is being improved, and the infrastructure for the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is being created, reports the State Border Guard of Latvia. In Latvia, the implementation of the project "Creation of a National (Unified) Situational Awareness System (Phase 3)" continues, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of control and monitoring of the state border. As part of the project, the surveillance systems of the State Border Guard and the College of the State Border Guard have already been modernized and expanded. This will allow for the monitoring of larger areas, expanding the observation zone, and increasing the effectiveness of the protection of the land border and border areas. Sensor systems have also been improved and expanded. Next-generation sensors provide higher accuracy and speed in detecting the presence of people and potential threats. In addition, equipment for processing and visualizing data from the maritime surveillance system of the State Border Guard has been purchased and installed. The new equipment will enable more effective processing of video streams in real-time and provide a clearer and more detailed picture of what is happening in the water area. As part of the project, the infrastructure of the Latvian unit of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) has also been modernized. The establishment of the national ETIAS unit has already been completed. Its main task will be to conduct risk assessments and make decisions on applications for entry permits that have been rejected by the automated system. At the same time, the procurement procedure for individual video cameras, as well as equipment for data processing, storage, and other peripheral devices, continues. The project is being implemented by the State Border Guard of Latvia. The leading institution is the Ministry of the Interior, and the project partner is the Information Center of the Ministry of the Interior. Funding is provided with co-financing from the European Union. The State Border Guard emphasizes that the modernization of technical infrastructure will enhance the efficiency of state border control, accelerate the detection of potential threats, and ensure a more rapid response to possible incidents both on land and at sea.
