More than half of the residents of Germany are in favor of completely closing the borders to refugees: 51% of those surveyed expressed support for this measure in a joint sociological study conducted by the marketing research company Ipsos and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The results were presented on Tuesday, July 14. 62% of respondents believe that many asylum seekers and migrants do not actually need protection, but are rather seeking economic opportunities or social benefits, according to the survey results. At the same time, 69% of Germans support the right of people to seek protection from war or persecution in another country. Trinh Tu, director of Ipsos UK, explains this contradiction by stating that in many countries, people generally support the protection of refugees, but at the same time are skeptical about its implementation. Only 30% of German participants in the study believe that migrants successfully integrate into Germany, and only 35% acknowledge their positive contribution to society. According to the survey results, the highest support for accepting refugees is observed in Sweden and the Netherlands (78%), followed by Spain (76%).
