In the first six months of 2026, potholes covering a total area of 187.2 thousand square meters were repaired on Latvia's state asphalt roads. This was reported by the Latvian State Roads (LSD). A total of 2.52 million euros, including VAT, was allocated for the repair of the asphalt surface. The majority of the work was done on local roads, where nearly 89.4 thousand square meters of surface were repaired. Approximately 80.1 thousand square meters were restored on regional roads, and 17.7 thousand square meters on major state highways. Compared to the first half of last year, the volume of repairs has increased. At that time, road services repaired potholes covering an area of about 179.7 thousand square meters. This indicates that after winter, road services had to address a significant volume of damage again, primarily on less busy local and regional roads. At the same time, work was also carried out on gravel roads. Over the six months, depressions and potholes totaling nearly 71.8 thousand cubic meters were eliminated. The cost of this work amounted to an additional 2.88 million euros. LSD reminds that mass asphalt repairs begin in spring when the average daily air temperature consistently exceeds +5 degrees Celsius. Priority is given to roads with the highest traffic intensity and higher maintenance class. Dangerous potholes deeper than five centimeters are repaired year-round, including in winter. In cold weather, cold asphalt technology is used for this purpose, and after warm weather arrives, road services transition to full surface repairs. LSD oversees more than 20 thousand kilometers of state roads, so addressing seasonal damage remains one of the largest annual tasks for road services.
