The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Clinical University Hospital of Stradins (PSKUS), is launching a pilot project aimed at promoting the responsible use of antibiotics and ensuring the continuity of antibacterial treatment after discharge from the hospital. As part of the project, patients will receive a full course of prescribed oral antibiotics (up to one month) free of charge upon discharge from the hospital. It is expected that this will improve the continuity of treatment, enhance therapy adherence, and help reduce the risk of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Antimicrobial resistance, which is the reduction in the effectiveness of antibiotics, remains one of the most serious threats to public health, while antibiotic consumption in Latvia continues to rise. During the pilot project, a new approach will be tested: patients whose condition is stable and who can continue the course of antibiotics at home will receive all necessary medications upon discharge from the hospital. This way, they will not have to search for medications at pharmacies after returning home. This approach will reduce the financial burden on patients, improve adherence to prescribed treatment, and decrease the risk of therapy interruption.
