In the Austrian city of Braunau am Inn, a long-term reconstruction of the house where Adolf Hitler was born has been completed. After the renovation, the historic building officially became a police station. Approximately 20 million euros were spent on the project. The house, where the future leader of Nazi Germany spent only the first months of his life, is located in the center of Braunau am Inn on one of the shopping streets. For many years, the building was privately owned. Until 2011, it housed a workshop for people with special needs, among other things. However, the owner refused to carry out the necessary renovations in accordance with modern requirements. After prolonged legal proceedings, the Austrian authorities expropriated the property in 2017. An expert commission considered various options for the future of the building. Ultimately, the specialists rejected both the idea of demolition and the proposal to create a museum. It was decided to renovate the house and house the district police administration and the local police station. Austrian authorities have repeatedly emphasized that they aim to eliminate the possibility of turning the house into a pilgrimage site for supporters of Nazi ideology. A memorial plaque has been installed in front of the building with the inscription: "For peace, freedom, and democracy. Never again fascism. Millions of victims remind us of this." The transformation of the house where Adolf Hitler was born into a police station has become a symbolic decision by the Austrian authorities. In this way, they intend to preserve the historic building while simultaneously stripping it of any cult significance and emphasizing their commitment to democratic values.
