Походы в музеи могут замедлять старение, выяснили ученые

The study is based on data from the large English project English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, which has been monitoring the health of residents of England over the age of 50 for many years. Researchers analyzed information from 1,899 participants, comparing their cultural activity with indicators of biological age. It turned out that people who visited museums, theaters, galleries, or cinemas at least once every few months were, on average, biologically younger than their chronological age by almost two years. For those who rarely engaged in cultural activities, the difference was only about four months. According to the authors of the study, this effect can be explained by several factors. Cultural leisure helps maintain social connections, reduces feelings of loneliness, positively affects emotional well-being, and often motivates individuals to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle. At the same time, researchers emphasize that it is not yet possible to confidently state a direct causal relationship. It is possible that healthier individuals are more likely to visit museums and theaters. Nevertheless, experts believe that the availability of cultural events may become one of the factors contributing to healthy longevity, as this aspect of life can be influenced, unlike genetics. This is not the first study linking art to health. Previously, researchers from University College London reported that regular creative activities can slow biological aging by about 4%. The new study is notable for the fact that researchers observed participants over several years and assessed changes in their physiological indicators over time.
