The Chief of the State Police categorically rejected claims that appeared on social media suggesting that police officers allegedly tried to 'cover up' for their colleague, including intentionally delaying the alcohol examination. "I trust the leadership of the Kurzeme region and the precinct - no one there attempted to cover anything up," Ruks stated. According to him, it was the State Police that conducted the initial procedural actions and detained the officer. Ruks did not elaborate on the reasons for the conflict. He stated that previously there was no indication that this police officer had alcohol dependency or other behavioral problems. He performed his duties well. Ruks explained that every police officer undergoes a medical check-up annually, including a consultation with a psychologist. If colleagues notice signs of possible problems, they are obligated to report it. The Chief of the State Police also acknowledged that in his practice there have been cases where police officers committed offenses while under the influence of alcohol. However, according to Ruks, such incidents are rare, and the level of discipline in the police is improving year by year.
