According to the president's office, Samantha Mostyn's visit is taking place from July 28 to 30 at the invitation of the Latvian side. This is the first official visit of the Governor-General of Australia to Latvia in 35 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. ### From Economy to Security During the meeting, the parties discussed the development of bilateral cooperation in the economy, culture, science, defense industry, as well as interaction in international organizations. In addition, the geopolitical situation in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, as well as continued support for Ukraine, were discussed. Rinkevics emphasized that Latvia highly values Australia's consistent position regarding Russian aggression, including its sanctions policy and the assistance provided to Ukraine. ### Betting on High Technologies The president noted that the universities of both countries are actively developing cooperation in the fields of new materials, sensor systems, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and other strategically important areas. According to the head of state, after the opening of the Latvian embassy in Canberra, economic ties between the countries have noticeably intensified. Cooperation between companies in the fields of information technology, artificial intelligence, and the defense industry, including among drone manufacturers, is developing particularly rapidly. Latvia and Australia intend to expand cooperation not only in political but also in economic and technological spheres. The signing of an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation could become one of the key steps to increase mutual investments and develop business relations.
