A company with expenses of 33.8 million euros would rank approximately in the third hundred of the largest enterprises in Latvia, however, there is a significant difference: the decisions, actions, or inactions of 100 representatives in the Saeima determine how we will live today and tomorrow, in a year and in a decade. It is important to emphasize that the deputies do not spare money for their own salaries and allowances, and since Latvia is a parliamentary republic, the opinion of the parliamentary majority can hardly be opposed by anyone. For 2026, the expenses for maintaining the Saeima are planned at 38.5 million euros, which is 4.7 million euros more than the previous year. The growth is almost 14%. According to the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), the average net salary for the first quarter of the year increased by 4.5%, while inflation in the country in 2025 was 2.9%. The increase in Saeima expenses exceeds both of these indicators by more than twice, and not by percentage points, but by the magnitude of the increase. Interestingly, the level of expenses for maintaining the Saeima that existed in 2008 was only reached again in 2020. This means that for 12 years, the parliament could operate with a significantly smaller budget than in 2008. Data from the State Treasury shows that the Saeima managed to demonstrate solidarity with the nationwide expenditure cuts, reducing its own costs from 19.4 million euros to 12.5 million euros, that is, by 6.9 million euros, or 35.6%. Starting from 2013, Saeima expenses gradually increased, and in 2018 and 2019 reached 16.9 million euros. At the same time, in 2022, these expenses were increased by more than 3 million euros, and in 2023 compared to 2021 - by more than 10 million euros.
