The Embassy of Latvia in Ukraine maintains constant communication with the honorary consul of Latvia in Sloviansk, Alexander Pavensko, and provides him with all possible support. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the agency, Pavensko confirmed that he intends to continue fulfilling his duties as honorary consul. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to analyze the recommendations of the Ukrainian authorities and the security situation in the Donetsk region, after which a final decision will be made regarding the further operation of the consulate. The ministry emphasizes that Latvia's position regarding Ukraine remains unchanged. The agency also states that Donbas is and will remain part of Ukraine. This is not the first time the honorary consul has had to work under direct threat. After the start of the full-scale war in 2022, Alexander Pavensko already experienced a forced evacuation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the Latvian consulate in Sloviansk remained the only international representation that did not cease operations from the first days of the war. It continued to perform consular functions and helped coordinate the support provided by Latvia to Ukraine. The reason for the ministry's new statement was the Russian strike on Sloviansk. According to Ukrainian authorities, on July 24, the building of the honorary consulate was destroyed by a direct hit from an aviation bomb KAB-250. Alexander Pavensko himself was not injured; however, two consulate staff members were wounded. After the attack, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia summoned the temporary chargé d'affaires of the Russian embassy and handed him a note of protest, expressing strong condemnation of the strike on Sloviansk and the destruction of the honorary consulate building. Despite what happened, the Latvian side states that it continues to support Ukraine and is considering the possibility of further operation of its honorary consulate in Sloviansk, taking into account the security situation.
