The container ship Janina, owned by the transport group FESCO, sank in the Black Sea on the night of August 1. The Russian side claims that the cause was an attack by two Ukrainian sea drones. This was reported by the head of the state corporation Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev. According to him, the incident occurred approximately 130 nautical miles from Novorossiysk, in international waters. Likhachev stated that all people on board were rescued. He described the vessel as a civilian container ship carrying commercial cargo, including frozen products, construction, and finishing materials. "This was an ordinary container ship that was in international waters and transporting civilian goods," said the head of Rosatom, calling the incident "piracy and maritime robbery." FESCO is part of the management structure of Rosatom, and the container ship Janina has been operated by the company since September 2021. According to the publication Astra, the length of the vessel is 142 meters, the width is 22 meters, and the capacity is 962 containers. The Russian side has not yet reported on the nature of the damage sustained by the vessel and has not provided additional details about the incident. In Likhachev's statement, it is mentioned that 17 crew members were rescued. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attack on the sanctioned vessel in the Black Sea. "Thanks to the accuracy of our Defense Forces, it went to the bottom," commented the head of state on the strike against the container ship.
