The number of Latvian citizens officially registered as living abroad continues to grow. As of July 1, 257,373 citizens of Latvia were living outside the country — 1.5% more than at the beginning of the year. Over the past six months, the number of such residents has increased by 3,801 people. This continues the trend of recent years, where the number of Latvian citizens permanently residing abroad has been gradually increasing. The most popular country remains the United Kingdom. Here, 102,086 citizens of Latvia have registered their residence — almost 40% of the total number living abroad. Since the beginning of the year, their number has increased by another 950 people. Germany is in second place, with 27,564 citizens of Latvia residing there. Over the past six months, their number has grown by 413 people. Rounding out the top three is Ireland, with 24,237 citizens of Latvia, which is 162 people more than in January. Despite the recommendations of Latvian authorities to refrain from traveling to Russia and Belarus following the onset of the full-scale war in Ukraine, some citizens still list these countries as their place of residence. According to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA), 5,355 citizens of Latvia are registered in Russia, which is eight fewer than at the beginning of the year. In Belarus, 1,128 citizens of Latvia officially reside — over the past six months, their number has, on the contrary, increased by 45 people. Additionally, four citizens of Latvia have listed Iran as their place of residence, two have listed Palestine, and 6,445 citizens of Latvia are registered in Israel. It is important to note that the OCMA statistics only reflect those citizens who have officially registered their residence abroad. The actual number of Latvians permanently residing in other countries may be higher. For comparison, as of January 1, 2026, 253,572 citizens of the country were registered outside Latvia. Thus, the growth has been ongoing for more than one reporting period.
