Commenting on the intention of the Ministry of the Interior to propose to the government to temporarily close the border control point "Paternieki" on the Latvian-Belarusian border, the Prime Minister stated that this issue will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, August 4. According to Kulbergs, the situation at the border with Belarus poses a real security threat that directly affects Latvia. He emphasized that any decisions should be made based on facts and statistical data, taking into account how they can reduce the burden on the state border and infrastructure. "We will wait for tomorrow," said the head of government, noting that the Cabinet intends to review the available data and assess the effectiveness of the proposed measures. In turn, the parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science, Ieva Silina, representing the National Alliance, reported that in recent days, after the suspension of operations at the "Paternieki" checkpoint for technical reasons, the number of detained border violators has significantly decreased. According to her, previously there were significantly more attempts to illegally cross the border recorded daily, while in recent days only a few people have been detained. In Silina's opinion, this may indicate a connection between the closure of the checkpoint and the reduction of migration pressure. It was previously reported that the Ministry of the Interior proposes to the government to temporarily suspend the operations of the only car checkpoint on the Latvian-Belarusian border. The ministry believes that this step will strengthen the country's security, reduce the burden associated with illegal migration, and make more effective use of the resources of the State Border Guard. The ministry also notes that Belarus has long been facilitating the direction of citizens of third countries to the external border of the European Union, thereby creating additional risks for the security of Latvia. The proposal is planned to be considered urgently. Currently, border control at the "Paternieki" checkpoint is impossible due to technical malfunctions in the information systems identified on July 31. The State Border Guard had previously recommended that those crossing the border use the checkpoints on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border if necessary. The government intends to make a decision on the future of the "Paternieki" checkpoint on Tuesday, assessing how its closure may contribute to reducing illegal migration and strengthening security on Latvia's eastern border.
