He emphasized that both the municipality and the hospital management are ready to cooperate with law enforcement agencies if necessary. "This morning, I discussed this situation with the new chairperson of the hospital's board. She reported that a new medical equipment engineer has already been hired at the institution. Therefore, in her opinion, similar problems can be avoided in the future," said Dagis. At the same time, the mayor refused to comment on whether the arrival of the new specialist is related to the dismissal of the previous employee amid the KNAB and EPPO investigation or if the reasons were different. As previously reported, at the end of July, KNAB and the European Prosecutor's Office conducted searches at the Bauska and Jelgava city hospitals. In a statement released by KNAB, the EPPO stated that investigative actions, including searches, were carried out as part of a criminal process that the European Prosecutor's Office initiated in the spring of 2026 after receiving information from KNAB. The investigation concerns possible large-scale fraud and abuse of office in the conduct of two public procurements in Latvian hospitals. According to the investigation, the alleged crimes could have harmed both the state budget of Latvia and the financial interests of the European Union. The procurements in question are worth €491,500 and €165,500, with a total amount of €657,000. The EPPO emphasized that this is just one of several criminal cases that the European Prosecutor's Office and KNAB are investigating in connection with possible violations in public procurement in Latvian medical institutions. According to the investigation, the entrepreneur could have arranged with one of the members of the hospital's procurement commission to influence the course of the procedure before the announcement of the competition, ensuring the victory of a pre-determined company. According to the available evidence, the technical specifications of the procurement and other requirements were allegedly drafted in such a way as to meet the interests of a specific applicant. This created unjustified advantages for them and allowed them to obtain the right to supply the equipment specified in the project. The European Prosecutor's Office believes that such actions could have been committed by abusing office position and misleading regarding the objectivity of the procurement procedure, which harmed the financial interests of the European Union. It is also worth noting that on May 21, KNAB conducted investigative actions as part of three criminal processes related to possible illegal collusion of officials from the Vidzeme Hospital, the Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital (TOS), and the Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital (PSKUS) with certain suppliers to ensure the victory of these companies in four public procurements. According to the investigation, for this purpose, the technical requirements of the procurements could have been specifically adapted to the products of certain medical goods suppliers. The total value of the contracts allegedly influenced by illegal actions amounts to at least €3,679,964, financed from the state budget of Latvia and the European Union. As part of these criminal processes, searches were conducted at more than 17 addresses in different regions of Latvia, including the Vidzeme Hospital, the Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital, and the Stradins Hospital. It was reported that four individuals received the status of persons entitled to protection — two state officials and two representatives of commercial companies. No preventive measures related to deprivation of liberty were applied to any of them, KNAB reported. The criminal processes related to the procurements of the Vidzeme Hospital and TOS were initiated by the European Prosecutor's Office after KNAB transferred the collected materials to the prosecutor's office for assessment in accordance with EU legislation requirements. After the cases were initiated, the EPPO assigned further investigation to KNAB. The case related to the Vidzeme Hospital was initiated by the European Prosecutor's Office on March 30 on suspicion of large-scale fraud and document forgery. The investigation concerning the Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital was initiated on April 8 on suspicion of large-scale fraud and abuse of office for selfish motives. The third criminal case concerns possible violations at the Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital. It was initiated by KNAB on April 9 on suspicion of demanding and receiving illegal benefits — a paid study trip — by an employee of the institution who is not a state official. As previously reported by the Latvian Television program *de facto*, the criminal cases concerning the Vidzeme Hospital and the Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital involve the same supplier — the company Arbor Medical korporācija. At the same time, the company's director, Dace Ratfeldere, denied that the investigated cases are related to the activities of the enterprise.
