The prime minister announced this on Monday after a meeting of coalition parties. As Kulbergs pointed out, the remote work practice introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic has remained in some places to an excessive extent, creating problems for residents who need to access services or reach officials by phone. According to the prime minister, his personal experience indicates difficulties in finding employees on-site in government institutions not only on Fridays but also on other working days. Therefore, he instructed to prepare a review of the organization of remote work in public administration and the possibilities for a broader return to in-person work. In certain cases, exceptions may be maintained, for example, for specific professions in the information technology sector or other specialized functions; however, in general, employees of government institutions should be available on-site. "Covid is no longer here; we need to return and work on-site," emphasized Kulbergs. The prime minister's initiative was supported by Minister of Economics Viktor Valainis, who also believes that remote work in public administration is too widespread. The Ministry of Economics and the Ministry of Agriculture have already limited this practice. Valainis emphasized that remote work was a solution during the Covid-19 pandemic, which public administration has not fully abandoned; however, in his opinion, the main principle in the entire public sector should be in-person work. Representatives of the coalition have not yet specified any timelines for possible changes in this area. The Ministry of Finance has been tasked with preparing an assessment of the remote work practice in public administration and possible exceptions.
