On July 30, fighters intercepted a reconnaissance Il-20 aircraft that was flying in international airspace from the mainland of Russia to the Kaliningrad region. The aircraft was flying with its radar transponder turned off, without a flight plan, but maintained radio communication with the Regional Flight Control Center. NATO's air policing mission in the Baltic states is conducted from bases in Lithuania and Estonia.
