Repeated water samples taken on July 27 confirmed that the microbiological indicators meet the established standards. As a result, swimming in Lake Saldus is once again permitted. According to the Health Inspectorate, swimming is currently allowed at all other official sea and inland beaches in Latvia. It is worth recalling that on July 31, specialists detected an elevated concentration of E. coli in the lake water, after which residents were advised to temporarily refrain from swimming. As explained by the agency, heavy rains had occurred in the Saldus area for several days prior to the sampling. The heavy precipitation could have caused surface runoff and temporarily increased the level of fecal contamination in the water body. During laboratory tests, specialists determine the levels of E. coli and enterococci — these indicators allow for the assessment of potential fecal contamination and the risk of pathogenic bacteria and viruses being present. The next, and also the last, water quality check at the official beaches in Latvia for this swimming season will take place on **August 24–25**. The swimming season in the country lasts until **September 15**.
