One of the initiators of the campaign to close the Mikhail Chekhov Theatre, publicist Juris Ulmanis, was displeased that the Russian titles of the performances on the theatre's poster and the Russian letters on the theatre's facade were not erased, but merely painted over or, more precisely, covered with green tape. In this regard, Ulmanis unleashed an angry comment on the social network X: "On the wall of the theatre, cowardly texts about faceless 'military aggressions' can be read, stubbornly avoiding naming the murderer and terrorist - Russia. Instead, the theatre shamelessly focuses on protecting the Russian language and its own comfort, while the decisions of the Ministry of Culture are formally bypassed with green tape. Such silence, covering for the aggressor, and maintaining bilingualism are not art at all. This is a direct threat to the national security of Latvia and a blatant disrespect for the victims of Ukraine and our people. The state-funded theatre must put an end to the policy of Russification and the division of society. If we do not put a stop to this inertia of Russification now, we will never do it. Political parties must stop manipulating the fears of voters, and the theatres of the country must cease to circumvent legal acts. This autumn, we need to show a strong backbone in the elections - this is Latvia, and the only language here is Latvian. It is time to tear down not only those green adhesive tapes but also the cowardice and desire to please that have persisted for decades. These remnants of Russification and attempts to circumvent the state language must disappear from our cultural space once and for all!"
