Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs stated that during one of the procurements of anti-drone systems, Latvia acquired equipment but did not provide it with the necessary ammunition. The head of government made this statement in an interview with the LETA agency, responding to questions about recent incidents involving drones and the state of the system for countering such threats. > “We bought the systems, but forgot to purchase the ammunition,” Kulbergs said. However, he did not disclose which specific procurement he was referring to, did not name the specific type of weaponry, and did not clarify which agency was responsible for this process. Journalists also asked the Prime Minister whether this was related to decisions made during the tenure of former Defense Minister Andris Spruds. However, Kulbergs did not directly confirm or deny such a connection. According to the head of government, he cannot reveal more details at this time, as issues related to incidents with drones and the country's defense capabilities are still under consideration. In fact, the Prime Minister indicated that the existing drone protection system requires serious refinement. According to him, Latvia often calls itself a “superpower in the field of drones,” but such statements do not always reflect the corresponding practical readiness. Kulbergs reported that work is currently underway to create a unified system for countering drones. This system is intended to combine the capabilities of the State Border Guard and the Ministry of Defense and ensure more effective control of airspace. In developing this system, the Prime Minister noted that Ukrainian experience is also being utilized. It is expected that specialized electronic warfare means and other counter-drone systems, rather than expensive missiles, will play the main role in combating drones. Andris Spruds served as Minister of Defense from September 2023 to May 2026. However, Kulbergs did not specify whether the situation he mentioned regarding the lack of ammunition relates to decisions made during that period.
