The operation 'Werewolf' has started at the Latvian-Belarusian border, aimed at enhancing control in the context of ongoing migration pressure. This was announced by Interior Minister Janis Dombrova during the '900 seconds' program on [TV3](https://tv3.lv/zinas/latvija/jaaptur-baltkrievijas-hibridkars-dombrava-atklaj-operacijas-vilkatis-uzdevumus/). According to him, the operation involves not only an increase in the number of involved personnel but also closer cooperation between state services. Until now, the main work at the border has been carried out by the State Border Guard and the State Police. Now, additional forces and technical resources will be engaged in the protection of the state border. > "It is necessary to increase the effectiveness of response to the hybrid war that Belarus is waging against Latvia," Dombrova stated. The minister explained that within the framework of the operation, special attention will be paid to information exchange between agencies, operational data transfer, and the use of modern surveillance technologies. He noted that enhanced control will allow for quicker identification of possible violations and a more rapid response to changes in the situation in the border area. Dombrova also commented on reports of a recently discovered underground tunnel at the border. He emphasized that this case was not the reason for the operation's initiation. > "The decision to conduct the operation was made in advance, and the tunnel was discovered only after that," the minister noted. Another task of the operation will be to expand international cooperation. Currently, Latvia is already supported by partners from Finland, Lithuania, and Estonia. At the same time, no specific deadlines for the completion of the operation have been announced. > "The main task now is to reduce and stop the pressure being exerted on Latvia," Dombrova emphasized. In recent years, Latvia has regularly strengthened the protection of its eastern border amid an increase in attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus. The new operation aims to combine the resources of various services and enhance the effectiveness of operations in the border area. Authorities do not specify a date for the completion of the operation, noting that it will continue as long as necessary to stabilize the situation at the border.
