The fire broke out on Thursday and within just a few hours approached buildings in the area of popular resorts Siviri and Furka. Due to the rapid spread of the flames, tourists began to be evacuated by sea. Small boats were mobilized for the rescue operation. Some vacationers were taken to nearby beaches, while about 200 people were transported to a vessel waiting at sea. A representative of the fire service reported that the sea evacuation became necessary as the flames approached directly to the beaches. According to the Greek public broadcaster ERT, a wall of fire approximately three kilometers long and up to 30 meters high was moving towards the resorts. About 200 rescuers fought the fire, and firefighting planes and helicopters were also involved. The work was seriously complicated by strong winds. After several hours of battling, the fire was brought under control. Firefighters continue to monitor the burned area due to the risk of re-ignition. Two firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital.
