He added that merely considering the collective statement would not be enough to make changes to the compensation system. According to Rokpelnis, amendments to the Saeima regulations will be required to implement the initiative. "After the initiative is considered, changes to the Saeima regulations will be necessary for it to come into effect, and this is a longer process. We will only be able to start the consideration, and the next Saeima will have to finish it," said the chairman of the ZZS faction. Earlier, Rokpelnis had already told the LETA agency that the compensation system for deputies' transportation expenses and housing rent should be preserved, as it helps ensure equal opportunities for deputies from Riga and the regions. In his opinion, deputies elected from the regions have more limited opportunities to regularly meet with their constituents compared to parliamentarians elected in Riga. At the same time, Rokpelnis acknowledged the possibility of revising the amount of compensation. As reported, on Thursday, the initiative to abolish compensation for Saeima deputies for transportation expenses and housing rent collected the necessary more than 10,000 signatures and will be submitted for consideration in parliament.
