Saeima deputy Aivars Butans (National Alliance) has called for support of his party's initiative for a complete ban on regular passenger transport to the Russian Federation. "The Riga-Moscow flights should be terminated. Security risks such as espionage, recruitment, and provocations cannot be subordinated to the commercial interests of an individual carrier or the potential costs of terminating a contract. Therefore, the National Alliance insists on a complete cessation of passenger transport with Russia starting January 2027. Every day, Riga-Moscow flights operate, and in the first half of this year, 9,079 passengers were transported on this route. This issue has not been addressed by the Saeima and the government for a year and a half. Every month that a decision is not made is a month in which the state consciously allows security risks. Every regular flight to Russia is a potential channel for espionage, recruitment, and provocations against the residents of Latvia and the security of the country. The National Alliance has repeatedly proposed to ban passenger transport to Russia, but the issue has not been resolved so far," the politician noted on social media.
