Let us remind you that yesterday the Minister of the Interior, Janis Dombrava, proposed to urgently adopt a plan of measures prepared by his ministry to limit migration. However, coalition partners decided not to rush into its consideration in the government, which caused dissatisfaction among the Minister of the Interior and his party. And today, the Prime Minister's advisor disseminated an explanation of the Prime Minister's position. "Latvia needs a migration policy that actually works. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs emphasizes that the political goal of the government regarding migration has not changed. Latvia requires stricter migration control, limiting unjustified entry and stay of third-country nationals in Latvia. At the same time, the solutions proposed to the government must be legally justified and mutually agreed upon. “The government’s goal has not changed. We must limit uncontrolled migration and close loopholes in the system. This task was assigned to the Minister of the Interior at the beginning of June. Almost three months have passed. Now I expect a concrete, feasible proposal from the minister, not an account of what has hindered its preparation,” reports A. Kulbergs. There can be no "stuck" coordination that has not yet been completed. The informational report from the Ministry of the Interior on the "implementation of the recommendations of the parliamentary investigative commission on migration" in the government system was presented on Monday, August 31, about an hour and a half before the coalition meeting. However, the coordination of the document with several ministries and institutions, whose competence directly concerns the proposed measures, has not yet been completed. The Prime Minister emphasizes that the assertion that someone has long blocked this document is not true. Coordination that has not yet been completed cannot be blocked. The document contains more than 70 measures concerning the economy, education, employment, foreign policy, Latvia's relations with the European Union, and several other areas of public policy. A. Kulbergs: “Some proposals also involve changes in European Union regulations. Such decisions cannot be made unilaterally by the Minister of the Interior on behalf of another ministry or all of Latvia. That is why at the coalition meeting we agreed on a very specific further plan.” My goal is to ensure that the document reaches the Cabinet of Ministers as soon as possible, and we can make decisions that are actually executable. I fully support a stricter migration policy, but Latvia needs a migration policy that actually works. Therefore, I expect from the Minister of the Interior not stories about what hinders his work, but quality work. This means quality proposals agreed upon with the responsible institutions. This work has taken almost three months. Migration is too serious an issue for the security, demographics, and economy of Latvia to be included in election campaigns for loud slogans.
