Soups are traditionally considered an important part of a balanced diet: they help diversify the menu and provide the body with fluids and nutrients. However, the benefits of the first course largely depend on its composition. One option that specialists advise against making a daily habit is meat solyanka. The main problem is the combination of several products high in salt and saturated fats. The classic recipe includes sausages, hot dogs, smoked meats, or fatty meats, as well as pickles, olives, and capers. As a result, one bowl can contain a significant amount of sodium. ## Why Solyanka Can Be Heavy for the Body Excess salt causes the body to retain fluid, which can contribute to increased blood pressure. With regular consumption of oversalted foods, the additional burden also falls on the kidneys, which need to maintain the balance of fluids and electrolytes. The composition of the meat base is equally important. Sausages, smoked meats, and other processed meat products can contain a lot of saturated fats. If fatty broth, frying, and sour cream are added, the energy value of the dish significantly increases. For the digestive system, such a combination can be too heavy, especially if such dishes appear on the table constantly. Therefore, the problem lies not in solyanka itself, but in the frequency of its consumption and its traditional composition. ## What to Replace Solyanka with in Everyday Menu There is no need to completely abandon soups. For regular meals, it is better to choose first courses with a large amount of vegetables, grains, or legumes and moderate salt content. Vegetable soups, light borscht, and dishes based on lean poultry or fish are suitable. When choosing meat, it is better to opt for fresh meat rather than replacing it with a large amount of sausages and smoked products. If desired, your favorite solyanka can also be made lighter: use lean meat, reduce the amount of pickled and smoked products, avoid overly fatty broth, and control the amount of salt. Solyanka does not necessarily have to disappear from the diet — it is much more important not to turn it into a daily dish. The more often oversalted and fatty products appear on the menu, the greater the burden on the cardiovascular system and kidneys. For everyday nutrition, it is wiser to choose less salty and fatty soups, leaving the rich solyanka as an occasional dish.
