The party proposes to pay an allowance to individuals who have reached retirement age, live alone, are not married, and have been assigned a state pension. The allowance is proposed to be paid once a year no later than December 31 of the corresponding year. The amendments stipulate that the State Social Insurance Agency will send a notification once a year to individuals who have reached retirement age about the possibility of applying for this allowance. The amount of the allowance for each budget year will be determined by the Saeima, and it must not be less than the amount of one minimum old-age pension for the corresponding year. The bill provides for the commencement of allowance payments from September 1, 2027. As the opposition points out, at the beginning of 2025, there were 150,000 households in Latvia where one person aged over 65 lived. The party notes that single pensioners are the least protected part of society, and therefore they need additional support of at least the minimum pension amount.
