The documentary film about Elon Musk has become the center of a conflict even before its premiere. The entrepreneur's lawyer sent an official legal warning to the film's creators, stating that it damages the reputation of the head of Tesla and SpaceX. The letter, dated September 3, was sent by lawyer Alex Spiro to the producer of Jigsaw Productions, founded by Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney. The document claims that the filmmakers approached their work with a preconceived opinion about Musk rather than striving for an objective investigation. Furthermore, the entrepreneur's defense states that the director refused to verify the facts presented in the film with Musk himself or his close associates. "This project did not start as an investigation. It started with a ready-made conclusion," the lawyer's statement reads. The legal warning was sent not only to the director and the production company but also to organizations involved in distributing the film, including HBO, Bleecker Street, and Universal. Despite Musk's complaints, the film premiered on Tuesday at the Venice Film Festival. The film was warmly received by the audience, earning prolonged applause and positive reviews from film critics. The film tells the story of the career of the entrepreneur born in South Africa and touches on his personal life. In particular, the filmmakers pay attention to Musk's childhood and his family, including information about 14 children born from relationships with several women. The filmmakers reject the accusations of bias. In response to the allegations, Jigsaw Productions stated that critical examination of the activities of influential public figures is protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech. The company also emphasized that this right should extend to all Americans, including Elon Musk's partners, who has repeatedly called himself a supporter of absolute freedom of speech. So far, it is only a legal warning. There is currently no information that Musk or his representatives have already filed a lawsuit.
