According to the BNS agency, in the winter, the Seimas plans to adopt an amendment to the Constitution and exclude from the country's fundamental law the provision prohibiting the deployment of weapons of mass destruction on its territory. "This could have been predicted in advance. This will be a very serious step in terms of escalating tensions," said Peskov. The Kremlin representative stated that if any country deploys nuclear weapons on its territory, then that weapon is intended for someone. "This weapon will not be aimed at the West. It will be aimed at the East – that is, at us. If nuclear weapons aimed at our territory are deployed on the territory of this country, then the territory of this country will also become a target for our nuclear weapons," emphasized Peskov. In early July, the Seimas approved in the first reading an amendment to Article 137 of the Constitution, excluding the provision prohibiting the deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania. On Wednesday, the project received support from the parliamentary Committee on Law and Order. Currently, Article 137 of the Constitution states that there can be no weapons of mass destruction or military bases of foreign states on the territory of Lithuania. The head of the Seimas, Juozas Olekas, previously stated that this provision no longer corresponds to geopolitical realities. According to him, the priority of the state in the current situation is to maintain peace, for which deterrence is important, the greatest effectiveness of which is provided by nuclear weapons. Defense Minister Robertas Kaušas also confirmed that negotiations are underway with the United States regarding the deployment of American nuclear weapons on the territory of Lithuania.
